Boys Basketball Draws to a Close

The high school boys basketball team came into February hungry after being defeated in the first round of the MNAC tournament. The first unlucky opponent to face the Longhorns were the Hay Springs Hawks. Hay Springs kept the game interesting but were defeated 63 to 48 by Hyannis. Liam Kostman led the way with 16 points, and four Longhorns scored in double figures. After a week-long break, the team traveled to Oshkosh for a game against the Garden County Eagles. Hyannis started slow, but demolished Garden County in the second half, winning 73 to 52. Liam Kostman once again led in scoring with a whopping 27 points. Another home game was on the schedule against Minatare on the 11th, and the Longhorns thoroughly dominated the Indians, 51 to 27. The next Friday, Sandhills Valley traveled to Hyannis to play the Longhorns in their final game of the season. The Longhorns played the Mavericks tough in the first few quarters but weren’t able to keep with Sandhills Valley. The Longhorns were defeated 77-55 and were the third seed in their district going into subs. In the first round, they would take on Paxton in Mullen. The Longhorns fell behind early, and were unable to recover, ending their season with a 37-58 loss to Paxton. The Longhorns went through a lot of adversity through the season, finishing with a 12-8 record. The team will work hard over the summer, and look to make it to the state tournament next year.
